The Spirit of the Jam

There is a growing number of people interested in playing musical instruments.
The best way to stimulate and maintain interest in music is by hosting a jam or karaoke.

The idea of a jam, is like karaoke but the difference is instruments as well as voice are welcome.
There are many skill levels that are attracted to the idea of a jam with the hopes of sitting in.
Different musicians get mixed together and can be quite spontaneous at times.
That is part of the fun of it.
It gives different musicians a chance to meet other musicians,
for bands, make new friends and overall, simply have fun.

There might be times when a novice or beginner gets hooked up with
a well known pro and that should be part of the fun of it.
It gives everyone more experience and helps to make playing levels better for everyone.

Sometimes, a whole band already together will want to showcase themselves as the band,
and there are times when a host might not understand or there might be so many people
wanting to play. It can be difficult to match people up. Some jam bands use a list,
and some just look around. There are so many combinations of jammers. There are some bands,
drummers, guitarists, singers, etc and some musicians paired up but need someone to complete
the lineup for their turn on stage. This can be quite confusing because
of the different combinations of people involved. Karaoke is actually easier
because all the participants want to sing. Jams have a variety of instruments and singers.

Some hosts play every song. Most hosts play the 1st set, and then start getting jammers up to play.
They might close the night out.

Hopefully, all the jammers will get the chance to play, but if they don't it is because
there is simply no time left in the jam. The best way to handle that is to reassure the people
who did not get to play, they will get to play next time. That simply promotes better
camaraderie among all involved.

Jams when run well keep people interested in music and perpetuate interest
in singing and also playing musical instruments. Music, by its nature
is a social thing and jams help promote the social aspect of music.

Thank you to the venues and musicians who support jams and keep them going. ----- Tom Wesolowsky
